Zim Olson's MAA Activity Grant Proposal

Dear Janet Barnett:

I would like to propose the setting up and maintainance of a web page to contain the links of Mathematics web sites belonging to current Rocky Mountain Section of MAA members.

I would like to propose that if this cannot be done on some free web space provided by an institution, that I purchase web space, for this purpose, at www.globat.com for their budget package of $166.00/ 2 years. And that I use my home computer and web publishing software (Front Page 2002) to upload and maintain this web page.

I think I would require, in addition, information on Rky. Mtn. Sec. membership in order to confirm identity of those submitting URL's for inclusion in the Rky. Mtn. Sec. Web Page.

In order to facillitate the making of this web page, I would like to request a link to my Web Page be put on the Rky. Mtn. Sec. of MAA web site pointing to the proposed web page. Here I would introduce the Project making available my email address: ZimOlson@yahoo.com (Free Email Address for 4megs space, $9.99/year for more space) for submission of URL's and other info. to be included in the Rky. Mtn. Sec. of MAA Member's Mathematics Web Page. This project could also be advertised in future Rky. Mtn. Sec. Newsletters.

The Member's URLs could be listed alphabetically by name with a description of their Mathematics submitted by the member.

How this Project would satisfy the Rky. Mtn. Sec. of MAA Mission Statement.

This would be a very efficient way of exchanging ideas between Rky. Mtn. Sec. members. The content of the web sites would be subject to some screening as to Mathematical content. In this day of information overload, the appropriate formatting and organization of this type of material makes all the difference in how this material is actually accessed and disseminated. The potential impact on the Rky. Mtn. Sec
members and services made to them by their membership could increase dramatically.

I am not a Teacher/Public Speaker by training or trade. Thus the benefits of the Section Annual meetings are limited to me. I , personally feel my membership would be made cost effective by the availability of a web page as I propose. I feel others would agree with this and this Idea may grow with proper nuturing by a attentive web page master such as myself. The cost can be almost zero if a web space is provided by an institution. The time neccessary to make and maintain this web page I feel would be minimal and impact potetially great with proper nurturing.
