Email from US Senator Salazar - February 23, 2007
Dear Zim:
Thank you for contacting me regarding the No Child Left Behind Act (NCLB).
I believe that school districts and educators, just like other professionals and elected officials, should be accountable to those they serve. However, I am concerned about the requirements placed on school districts, many of which lack the adequate funding needed to reach these goals. Furthermore, I am also concerned that to meet the needs of our diverse students and schools we must allow more flexibility in assessing student improvement and teacher qualifications than NCLB currently allows. The Congress will be considering these important issues this year because NCLB is due for reauthorization in 2007. I will be considering how to reform the law with my colleagues as we put together legislation to reauthorize it.
This past year I surveyed Colorado educators on their experiences with the No Child Left Behind Act. Over 2,000 Colorado teachers, principals, superintendents, education board members, and parents responded to the survey. I will use the survey findings, as well as additional input I receive from Coloradans such as yourself, as I work with my colleagues on the reauthorization of the No Child Left Behind Act.
