Response to Zim's Rocky Mountain Section of Math. Assoc. of America " Actvity Grant" Proposal
MAY 3, 2004
Dear Mr. Olson
On behalf of
the Executive Committee I would like to thank you for your interest in the quality
of the web page of the Rocky Mountain Section of the MAA. As is our procedure your
proposal was sent to two reviewers. Unfortunately based on their recommendations,
below, we are unable to fund you proposal.
Review #1.
The objective
of the proposal - to improve the appearance and maintenance of the section web site
- it certainly worthy……. Unfortunately, Zim is not the person to do it. His
resume and biographical sketch mention two years of
experience working with computers and no indication that he has done extensive work
on web sites. Among the several outdated languages that he mentions, there are no
web languages. Someone doing this work should have some experience with html at
least. The appearance of his resume on his web site is an indication of the work
we could expect. So I recommend rejecting this proposal.
Review #2.
I feel this
proposal meets the guidelines for the section proposals and the idea supports many
of the mission statements of the section. However, I recommend that the section
does not award this grant for the following reasons:
In looking at the applicants web page, the link of which was provided in his application, I did not find evidence that the applicant would create a professional page that would adequately represent our section. I do not feel that this page should be hosted at a separate site linked from the section page. If the section supports the idea of a member link page, then this page should be maintained as part of the section web page, with the same overlying design and regulation.
Although I
do not feel that this grant should be funded, I do think this might be a good idea
to pursue, and I would hate to turn away someone who is willing to volunteer his
time. Perhaps something could be worked out to allow Zim Olson to help maintain
this page, once it has been properly designed, by looking for broken links, etc.
Sincerely,
Rob Tubbs
